The first thing I thought when I started reading was that the five seemed like a fun group. I love how throughout, unlike a lot of other books like this, there are light hearted moments with the characters that are fun to be part of. These characters are easy to like and are quick to feel like friends more than just characters I’m reading about. It’s rare for me to actually feel involved with the characters and the world. This book accomplishes that. It’s a highly engaging and fast paced read. Unlike many longer books, I didn’t want to take a break while reading. I still needed to, but I really didn’t want to stop reading for anything. I was surprised for the kind of book it is, that I found it to be believable and have a realistic feel to it. The world and characters are easy to imagine and at a different time, I think the village would be an awesome place to live. It sounds like it would be paradise during better times.

It’s difficult to believe such a young author can be the talented force behind this thrilling adventure. This series defies categorization; it contains action, adventure, sci-fi and magical elements in a story of friendship, loyalty and trust set in a world sliding into dystopia. It is indeed with delight I read this YA fantasy mystery, revelling in the adventure of a lifetime for five young people predestined by fate to do battle with forces of darkness.
Interesting also is the emphasis raised on preservation of nature and the interactive, symbiotic relationship of man and nature.
Aegis Rising surprisingly reminds me of similar ideas expressed in older books such as Beastmaster by doyenne Andre Norton and the Petaybe series of Anne McCaffrey. I always harboured a particular fondness for those books. SS Segran joins now with this treasured cadre.

“Aegis Rising” by S.S. Segran is laudable for many reasons; the originality of the story line, depth of characters and the general flair for the written word. It seems Segran is a born writer, coaxing beauty from mundane words and imagery that paints mountains and volcanos in your mind.
A small plane has gone down in the Yukon, just north of the MacKenzie Mountains. Aboard the ill-fated Comanche 6 passengers eagerly waited to land and start their vacation. 5 teenage friends of varying looks and talents, along with their pilot, Mr. Tyler, father to one of the boys. A sudden and severe storm brings the plane, and it terrified occupants, crashing down – and crashing into a destiny none of them could have imagine.
So, so many years before, an advanced civilization had fled a volcano, the few survivors boarding a boat and setting sail for parts unknown. What they found was land held my another people, a tribe that eventually accepted and even enveloped them – the two mixing as biology is wont to do. They passed down their genes and their legends, and with each generation a prophecy that was held in sacred trust. This spoke of the 5 Saplings of Aegis would appear, the bearers of light. The elders of this tribe believe the crashed youths to be those Saplings – a fact that is enforced as their recovery advances.
This is a fascinating look at a new history and a new future, a look back while looking forward. The 5 friends, each so unique, has to adjust in his or her own way to the situation – and to the thought that they are meant to be there. The elders, not all of which agree, have to convince them that they are needed and they are fated, a high task as destiny spars with anger, home sickness, loss and fear, not to mention learning new things, accepting wild animal friends and coming to terms with a future so far removed from anything any of them could ever have imagined. It’s a combination that inspires heroes – and a wonderful story.
Aegis Rising is the beginning of series of 5 special teens. Each one has a or several unique abilities that make more special. They all awake some time after what could have been a deadly plane crash and are brought back to health by a hidden tribe, unknown to the world. As time passes, they learn more about themselves and why they have been so well cared for. Strange people, strange animals, and a strange place all await you as you read this first story. Hard to put down, I wanted to read just one more page as I feel asleep reading, waking myself when i dropped my . Just one more page¡
Five kids on a plane get rescued after the plane crashes, but not by who they expect. Their rescuers are very different and they find there is more to them than meets the eye. They also discover that they, themselves are different. As they learn more about their rescuers, they learn more about themselves and what life has in store for them. They are the good in a battle between good & evil. I truly enjoyed reading this and was kept on the edge of my seat.
