Jay Leicester (pronounced "Lester") is a retired Airline Pilot, retired because he could not stand the bureaucratic web the government spun over the aviation industry, and partly because anyone with the price of a bus ticket could fly on the airlines, which resulted in overbooking, overcrowding, and near chaos on every route. Raised in a family of Judges and police officers, the only thing he knew to fall back on was the law. Opening his own private investigation business was a natural evolution, especially since he had trouble with authority, and could work outside the constraints of legalese. Handling mostly aviation related cases; recovery of stolen aircraft, investigating drug-hauling pilots, and helping set up corporate aviation departments kept him busy.

The crash of a Gulfstream V corporate jet with three of his friends aboard leads Leicester from Mississippi to the Napa Valley wine country in California where he becomes involved with an old world family winery, the investigation of the crash, murder, and a beautiful raven-haired siren who could love him or kill him, and a beautiful blond who almost does kill him. Fine wines, good food, and evil people all come together in a powerful work reminiscent of Ross MacDonald or John D. McDonald. Character driven and plot oriented, this is a must read for the serious Mystery/Thriller ‘aficionado.’

Despite other reviewers' comments, I did not find the book boring, nor was it well edited. In fact, the latter mystifies me because the repeated misuse of words drove me batty.

1. The punctuation errors primarily involved confusion between plurals and possessives.

2. The more serious criticism involves erroneous use of "sound-alike" (or at least close) words: compliment/complement; loner for loaner, devise for device; suspicion for suspected; lightening for lightning; suits for suites; massage for message, etc., etc.

3. A book so focused on wine should take extra care to get wine-related references correct. I painfully encountered "vintage brute" champagne; methode chamgenoise; misspelling of Mondavi winery, Martell cognac, etc.

I am familiar with Napa Valley, wines and French. While I appreciated the setting and periodic French allusions and liked learning a bit about aviation , I found the errors frustrating and irksome. I have downloaded the series of books and have my fingers tightly crossed that the editing will improve or they may lose a reader.

Blood on the Vine Book 1 of the Jay Leicester Mysteries Series edition by JC Simmons Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

My first venture into this particular series. I was hoping for something a little more exciting and mysterious, not so bogged down with the manusha of the wine business. It is after all a "mystery-thriller", right? I'm not going into the story, many others already have. I will try another of the Jay Leicester Series to see if it was just this particular novel that didn't grab me, because I do like the character, quirks and all.
If you want explosions and gun battles and car crashes, this is not for you. If you want a well-crafted mystery with likeable characters, you'll enjoy reading "Blood on the Vine." The author gives the reader some good background and history of the wine culture of Napa Valley, as well as air crash investigation, which adds richness to the story. A very enjoyable read.
Spellbinding, keeps you wanting to know more about the circumstances surrounding the crash of the plane, that killed so many people. Well written , keeps you n suspense from page one. A must read for someone who live mysterious.
I read this book many years ago and it's still excellent. I like Jay and I will definitely read more about him.
I love a book that is part of a series and this one, being the 1st in this series, was a great introduction to the main character. Well written, good story line. Not too much information on each person in the story where it gets boring, this was very well done - just enough info to keep you interested in each person and wanting to maybe know more. I was totally satisfied with the great ending, which isn't always the case. I am looking forward to more stories written by this author.
I read this book yesterday, and did not expect to like it as much as I did. I wasn't sure if I would be able to understand the aviation "talk", (and to be honest, I didn't get it all), but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. I felt that the characters were well developed, and that enough clues were given to make it fair to the reader, while still keeping an element of suspense in the story. I do not like to read extraneous gory details, and senseless violence, and neither was present in this book.

The book was nicely formatted. I noticed a couple of spelling errors and one instance where missing punctuation caused me to read a line a few times, before I got what was being said, but these things were not really a distraction for me.
I enjoyed this whole series. The only problem I had was that I wasn't sure how to pronounce the main character's last name and got hung up on that from time to time. Clear that up front and centre and that would help, I get easily sidetracked and stopping to decide how to pronounce Leicester too often is a bit distracting to the story (or is that just me???). I'm always overjoyed to find a new series to read because after investing time with a character I hate to say goodbye after just one book...this one has 10, each one with a new and unique mystery to solve. There are also interesting tidbits of knowledge that I picked up just reading and enjoying these books. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
